It's Monday, What Are You Reading? October 6, 2014

Please visit the amazing blogs: Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers who host this terrific meme each week.

Here are my books from last week. Click on the pictures to learn more about each book.

I enjoyed this poetic nonfiction(ish) picture book. I will highlight it here on Wed.

Although I do usually enjoy Quentin Blake, I wish I could say I enjoyed this book. It was just too weird for me.

Enjoyed this story of determination and resiliency. Unfortunately the story is based on the author's experiences here in the US after her family fled Vietnam.

Finished reading...
Yes, it is as good as everyone says. A must-read and my current Newbery Fave!

I finished listening to...
This compelling story was perfectly narrated by Peter Coyote.

  1. Quentin Blake is one of my earliest identifiable author/illustrators! He did McBroom Tells the Truth, and I loved that as a child. I was actually surprised that he is still writing, as he must be in his 80s! The Woodson book was very good.

  2. Wow, lots of titles that speak to me. I read Zebra Forest this spring on a sick day so all in one sitting and really enjoyed it. Inside Out and Back Again is such a beautiful book and I can't wait to read Brown Girl Dreaming.

  3. I really like Inside Out & Back Again. Brown Girl Dreaming is at the top of my Newbery list too--though I still haven't finished it! I've been working on a review of Thrive--I think it's a great book for new teachers.

  4. I loved the immigrant experience shown in Inside Out & Back Again, read it with students during the year we studied immigration. Love the look of Agate, Gigi. What a fun book!

  5. BGD was amazing, I can't wait to reread it at some point! I hope you enjoy The Night Gardener, I didn't expect to like it as much as I did and it turned out being one of my favorites for this year!

  6. I absolutely enjoyed The Night Gardener - definitely one of my favourite reads this year. Inside Out and Back Again made me cry - such a beautiful novel-in-verse.
