It's Monday, What Are You Reading?- December 23, 2013

Please visit the amazing blogs: Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers who host this terrific meme each week.

I did not post last week due to the craziness of the week before vacation. I also have not had much time to read, but here are the few I managed to get through.

Nonfiction Picture Books

by Robert Stead
Illustrated by Floyd Cooper
Not being a baseball enthusiast, I was unaware of this event when I started reading this book.  My husband enjoyed my updates as I read it.  I really enjoyed reading about this historical event.  It is a great reminder of our embarrassing past and how we must be diligent in creating a world of equality and free of judgement.
Grades 3-5

by Meghan McCarthy
Betty Skelton was an amazing woman.  Betty was fearless and let nothing stand in her way. I admire her spunk and she is a great example of "girl power".

I finished listening to the first three books in Gordon Korman's On the Run series.

One of my students recommended the first book to me.  It is an exciting series where two children of convicted terrorists become fugitives in order to prove their parents' innocence. You can't help but root for them.  I need to find the last three books.

Professional Book

The Energy to Teach
by Donal Graves
While this book was not as helpful as I thought it would be, it did serve as a great reminder to be aware of what gives us energy and what depletes our energy.  I found that there are far too many tedious and mundane activities that occur on a daily basis that sap my energy and have nothing to do with teaching my students. Conversely, I am more aware of what gives me energy like a strong PLN.

Currently Reading

by Tim Federle

Next?
Oh so many possibilities. I want to read my ARC of The Shadow Throne and maybe another professional book such as What Readers Really Do.  Not quite sure just yet.

  3. Thanks for sharing about the On the Run series. I will have to check that out. I read your non-fiction book choices recently too thanks to Nerdies. Great spotlights on people that we otherwise might not know. Have a wonderful week!

  4. I just read Daredevil last week and loved it. Such an interesting life! I haven't even heard of Gordon Korman's On the Run series. Sounds like a page-turner! I'm going to have to look for the first one. Thanks!

  5. The Gordon Korman books caught my eye. He was one of my favorite writers in the 39 clues series. :)
