It's Monday, What Are You Reading? July 22, 2013

Before I talk about the books I read this week, I want to make sure you have seen my new reading event calendar.  It is under the blog header next to the "Home" tab. I also did a post about reading events last week.  Click here to see it.

Please visit the amazing blogs: Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers who host this terrific meme each week.

This week I read...

Nursery Rhyme Comics
50 Timeless Rhymes from 50 Celebrated Cartoonists

This book was so much fun to read.  Each classic nursery rhyme is illustrated by a different cartoonist.  They each interpret the rhyme in their own unique way.  Artists include Ben Hatke (Zita the Spacegirl), Nick Bruel (Bad Kitty) and Raina Telgemeier (Smile and Drama).
I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads.

The Cloak Society by Jeremy Kraatz
This book is on the Maine Student Book Award list for 2013-14.
I really enjoyed reading this book.  It is about a boy who was born into a family of super-villains and is having second thoughts.  The young Cloak Society members are training to take over the world. It reminded me a bit of The Lightning thief.
I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads

  1. Hi Gigi! Your Reading Events Calendar is so awesome! I'm hoping this idea catches on with many blogs, it is such a great way to stay connected with what is coming up in the future, both on your blog and beyond. Really cool! I'm thinking Nursery Rhyme Comics looks like one that should be added to my classroom library! I can't wait to see if you like Paperboy, I've seen people on both sides of that one. Have a wonderful week!

  5. Hey Friend!

So glad to read that you're liking Paperboy! I just finished Sugar by Jewell Parker Rhodes this morning. Another wonderful historical fiction set during the Reconstruction period. Her writing is just beautiful.

I'm starting Jinx now and then who knows what I'll read next!

    Have a great week...talk soon!

    1. Ooh, I am not familiar with either of those titles. I am trying to finish the MSBA's without getting too far behind with new stuff. Such a juggling act. Hope you are enjoying your time off.

  7. I really want to read Paperboy, but won't get to it too soon-too many others. It does sound good. Thanks for the heads up of the Nursery Rhyme Comics-sounds like a lot of fun to see and read. I've started Beholding Bee-so far, very good. Thanks Gigi-and again thanks for that wonderful reading calendar!

    1. Beholding Bee is on my list also. I am trying to finish books on my state award list (like Cloak Society) without getting too far behind on new titles, but it's hard to keep up. Have a great week Linda!
