It's Monday, What Are You Reading? September 1, 2014

Please visit the amazing blogs: Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers who host this terrific meme each week.

Every week I read the Monday posts and I always find new books to read. This week's picture books were all on last Monday's posts. I regret that I forget where I found them, but I would like to thank my nerdy bloggers for always sharing such great books.

Picture Books Fiction
This Plus That: life's Little Equations
by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
I am a huge fan of Amy Krouse Rosenthal and this book is just as good as the rest. Students can think about equations in a different way. Great for grades K-4.

Practice + Practice= Learning

Hooray for Hat!
by Brian Won
Feeling grumpy? Try putting on a fun hat. Cute story about cheering up friends. Grades K-2.

Missing Mommy
by Rebecca Cobb
Sweet, sad story about a young girl who has lost her Mommy.  It focuses on her feelings and the support of her family. Grades K-3.

Nonfition Picture Book
The Long, Long Journey: the Godwit's Amazing Migration
by Sandra Markle
Illustrated by Mia Posada
This book chronicles the godwits' early life through their migration to New Zealand. It is filled with interesting facts about the bird and migration with wonderful illustrations.

Middle Grade
Fish in a Tree
by Lynda Mullaly Hunt
My daughter and I read this novel aloud together and it is just wonderful. You will love Ally and her amazing teacher Mr. Daniels. Review to come. Grades 3 and up.

Currently Reading
Spirit's Key
by Edith Cohn
I will probably be able to finish this one today. It is a really intriguing mix of fantasy and realistic fiction.

  1. I've heard good things about Spirit's Key. Need to get around to reading that one. Niki Barnes recommended it so I think I probably need to read it when a fellow Nerdy personally recommends a book to me. :)

  3. I really enjoyed Spirit's Key! I think it's a perfect blend of fantasy and mystery for middle graders. Our 4th grade students just started an advanced copy I got ahold of ! Can't wait for FiaT. I've heard amazing things about it. This Plus That is new to me, I just put it on hold. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I'm a huge Amy Krouse Rosenthal fan too. I'm planning to use This + That as a mentor text later in the semester in my Comp class--sometime when we need a break from writing longer pieces. I loved the whimsy and the message of Hooray for Hat! Longing to get my hands on Fish in a Tree--everything I've read about it so far makes me think it's just my kind of book.

  5. I found your blog from Jen's Teach Mentor Texts link-up.

Those 3 fiction picture books look like so much fun!!! I totally want to find them at a library now. What a great way to show that reading and math go together with "This Plus That".

  8. Hi Gigi! I love your list this week - lots of new titles for me. However, This Plus That is one that I have LOVED ever since it came out! I have used it for SO many lessons - and my students have made equations for so many things - seasons, feelings, weather - I have also linked it to science and social studies! Amazing book! Missing Mommy and The Long, Long Journey are definitely ones I will be checking out! Thank you!

  10. Spirit's Key was special. Alyson Beecher had a post by Edith Cohn on her blog this week that was really informative about her intent while writing: http://www.kidlitfrenzy.com/kid-lit-frenzy/2014/8/27/spirits-key-author-edith-cohn-talks-about-writing-shares-a-giveaway I appreciated reading her account, knowing the book!

  11. Missing Mommy looks like a terrific resource for teachers. There can't be enough books about grief, in my opinion, as so many of our children suffer from horrible losses. Thank you for sharing all of these books with us, Gigi! I loved reading your reviews. Have a wonderful week!
